Raleigh's Go-To Lumber Yard Since Day One

Quality kiln-dried lumber, building materials, and expert advice at 4216 Beryl Rd in Raleigh.

About Us

On Beryl Road in southwest Raleigh, Capitol City Lumber Co fills a gap that big-box stores simply cannot. Contractors pulling up at dawn, weekend DIYers hunting a specific board dimension, homeowners tracking down a Fulton mailbox that matches neighborhood specs, they all end up here because the selection is real and the staff actually knows what they're talking about.

The lumber itself sets the standard. Customers consistently call out the KDAT pressure-treated stock: straight, properly dried, free of the warped and waterlogged boards that plague chain stores. When you're framing a deck or running a fence line, that difference shows up immediately in your cuts and your corners.

With a 4.4-star rating built on nearly 200 reviews, Capitol City has earned a reputation that reaches well beyond Raleigh proper. Builders drive in from Wake Forest and beyond because finding a true lumber yard in the Triangle is harder than it should be, and this one delivers every time.

What We Offer

Capitol City Lumber Co stocks the full range of dimensional lumber, including kiln-dried pressure-treated 2x4s, 1x4s, and beyond, all kept in conditions that protect quality from the yard to your job site. Whether you're framing, decking, fencing, or finishing, the inventory runs deep enough that you won't be making a second stop.

Beyond raw lumber, the store carries hardware and building materials covering everything from fasteners and mailboxes to specialty items that the home improvement chains rarely bother to stock. The clean, well-organized layout means you can find what you need without hunting down an associate, though the staff is always close by when you do have questions.

Capitol City also serves as a local supplier and manufacturer, making it a resource for contractors who need consistent material sourcing rather than whatever happens to be on the pallet that week. Ample parking keeps the operation smooth even on busy Saturday mornings.

"When first moving here I was disappointed to find Wake Forest so devoid of lumber yards. After some hunting, it seems Capitol City Lumber is the best around. A bit of a drive but not bad if you can avoid rush hour. I happened to see a fall hardwood sale so drove down and was very happy to find the cherry I need to finish some shaker end tables. Had a great selection, easy enough to pick through to select good quality nice looking boards. They skip plane so 4/4 is about 7/8” but it does make it easier to see the color and grain. Also decided to grab some poplar for face frames and doors for a wall cabinet. Regular prices can be kind of steep but the sale was great, especially for wider boards. The yard guy was very nice as well. At the time I did not have my roof rack so to fit in my hatchback, he cut every piece just as I desired. Hopefully their sale is a regular thing."

"We went to Capital City Lumber today to pick up a new Fulton mailbox. They had just what we needed that matches the style we are required to have in our neighborhood. The store was clean and the staff were friendly."

"Excellent quality lumber, friendly staff and convenient parking. I bought several eight foot long Kiln Dried Pressure Treated (KDAT) 2 x 4s and 1 x 4s. All were in excellent condition."

"After calling and emailing about availability, I submitted a large online order for a whole decks worth of KDAT (400ft2). Received a confirmation number and a pickup day on the order. This was for a project at my sister's about 2 hours away. Had my Dad meet me there with a flatbed on pickup day. They were out of half of the ordered wood. To add a little something special to the whole deal, I got chewed out by one of their yard guys when I told him that the office had given me his name for help loading (before we found out they were out of product). I thought it was strange that they had told me inside that I wouldn't pay until the wood had been picked. Wasted 2 hours worth of driving for 2 of us. Worst experience ever. Go to an actual lumberyard with sawdust piled up somewhere onsite."

"i dread coming here for wood, but will still do it over big stores. the outside staff acts like they’re doing you a favor when you ask for help. When i asked for a rough cut of plywood they could only do in half - it still didn’t fit in my car so they had to cut it again anyways when i asked the inside staff."

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is Capitol City Lumber Co located?

The yard is at 4216 Beryl Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606, in the southwest part of the city. Parking is plentiful and the layout makes loading straightforward.

Do you carry kiln-dried pressure-treated lumber?

Yes. Capitol City stocks KDAT (Kiln Dried After Treatment) pressure-treated lumber in common dimensions like 2x4 and 1x4. Customers consistently note the boards are straight and in excellent condition compared to big-box alternatives.

Is Capitol City Lumber good for contractors, or mainly for homeowners?

Both. The store functions as a supplier and manufacturer in addition to a retail operation, so it handles contractor-volume needs alongside weekend DIY projects. The experienced staff can assist with either.

Do you carry hardware and specialty items beyond lumber?

Absolutely. The store stocks hardware, mailboxes including specific styles required by HOA neighborhoods, and a range of building materials. If you need something specific, call ahead or check the website at capitolcitylumber.com.

Is Capitol City Lumber worth the drive from Wake Forest or other parts of the Triangle?

Many customers say yes. True independent lumber yards are rare in the Triangle, and the quality of material and staff knowledge makes the trip worthwhile according to numerous reviewers who come from Wake Forest and beyond.

How do I know what lumber dimensions and grades you have in stock?

The best approach is to call ahead or visit the website at capitolcitylumber.com for current inventory. The staff can help confirm availability and suggest alternatives if a specific size or grade isn't on hand.

What sets Capitol City apart from Home Depot or Lowe's for lumber?

The main difference is material quality and expertise. Capitol City's pressure-treated lumber is properly dried and straight, and the staff has real building knowledge. For projects where board quality matters, most experienced builders prefer a dedicated lumber yard.
